Preventive Dental Care
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this is especially true in dentistry. A preventive care plan, combined with an excellent at-home oral care routine, is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid tooth decay and damage.
Not sure which preventive services your smile needs? We recommend scheduling a routine check-up with our team, and we will be glad to assess your oral health and design a custom treatment plan just for you.

What can I expect at my
routine cleaning and exam?
We start by gently removing plaque and tartar from your teeth, followed by polishing to leave your smile smooth and fresh. Dr. Austin or Dr. Geiler will then check for cavities, gum disease, bite issues, and any other concerns, and X-rays may be taken if needed. These visits help us catch problems early and keep your oral health on track.
Why are my gums bleeding when I brush?
Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum inflammation caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. When plaque isn’t removed thoroughly, it can irritate the gums and lead to gingivitis. Brushing too hard, using a stiff-bristled toothbrush, or skipping flossing can also contribute. If bleeding continues, it’s important to schedule an appointment so we can check for early gum disease and offer personalized care.
How can I tell if bad breath is a sign of a deeper dental issue?
Bad breath can come from strong foods or dry mouth, but ongoing odor may point to problems like gum disease, tooth decay, or infections. If brushing, flossing, and mouthwash don’t help, it’s a good idea to visit us for an exam. We can check for hidden plaque, periodontal issues, or other concerns that may be contributing to persistent bad breath.
Are fluoride treatments just for kids,
or can adults benefit from them too?
Fluoride treatments are helpful for both kids and adults. While children benefit from fluoride as their teeth develop, adults can use it to strengthen enamel, reduce sensitivity, and lower the risk of cavities. Fluoride is especially helpful if you’re prone to decay, have dry mouth, or have a history of dental work. It’s a simple way to add extra protection to your smile!
What’s the difference between fluoride treatments and dental sealants?
Fluoride treatments strengthen the enamel and help prevent decay on all tooth surfaces. Sealants, on the other hand, are thin, protective coatings applied to the grooves of back teeth to block food and bacteria. While fluoride works broadly, sealants offer targeted protection in areas most likely to develop cavities. Many patients benefit from using both for stronger overall prevention.
